Utah Governor Declares State of Emergency Amid Extreme Wildfire Danger
US · Published Jun 26, 2026
Utah Governor Spencer Cox has declared a state of emergency and issued a temporary statewide ban on fireworks ahead of the Fourth of July due to unprecedented wildfire risks (KUTV, 2026-06-25).
The decision follows a historically dry winter and ongoing efforts to contain five major wildfires, including the Iron Fire near Eureka and the Cottonwood Fire in Southern Utah.

Impact & Risks

The wildfires have already caused significant destruction, including the loss of homes and buildings, and have forced evacuations in affected areas like Eureka. With 94% of Utah experiencing severe or extreme drought, the risk of new fires remains high. Strong winds, with gusts up to 50 mph, and dry lightning from thunderstorms could lead to rapid fire spread. The state is also grappling with hazardous air quality due to smoke from the fires, posing health risks to residents, particularly those with respiratory conditions.
